Lingcod can be found in waters extending from Baha, California, up past British Columbia to Alaska. Although they have been found in depths of 427 m and deeper, the fish prefer to be inshore, mostly near rocks.
Lingcod belong to a family of fish called greenlings. They are the only Canadian greenling that has canine-like teeth and separated gill membranes. The colour of the fish varies with its environment, but mainly consists of dark mottling over brown, grey, green or blue shades. Their bellies are grey white. Lingcod have been known to weigh up to 45 kgs; the females attain a larger average size than the males. Meat can sometimes have a green tinge to it, which turns white when it is cooked.
